Bad Weather Guidelines

Always remember that the church's obligation to be present in the Sunday Assembly is a reasonable obligation. You should never endanger yourself on bad roads, or compromise general safety to travel to church. If authorities are asking people to stay off the roads, or if reports are clear that travel is difficult or hazardous, then it is not reasonable to try and fulfill your obligation to be present for a weekend liturgy. It is not confessional matter to miss Mass in this regard.

However, since there are always "gray" areas, these additional guides might be helpful:

Daily Mass, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday at 8:00 a.m.: If Asheville Catholic School has announced it will be closed due to bad weather, there will be no morning Mass at the church. This announcement is made after 6:30 a.m. on WLOS (channel 13 TV) and on WCQS FM Radio 88.1. If Asheville Catholic School announces it will open late (usually at 10:00 a.m.) then the daily Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. If school is closed on Monday or Thursday, there will be no evening Mass.

Do not assume that any other activities scheduled for that day have been canceled unless it is announced or, in case of a small group meeting, you are contacted by phone.

Saturday Evening and Sunday Morning: If bad weather is in progress, do not jeopardize your safety by getting out on the roads. We will try to make an announcement about cancellations. Generally, if bad weather has stopped, there will be a celebration of the Eucharist on Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m. and Sunday evening at 5:30 p.m. On Sunday morning, if roads are icy or bad weather is in progress, listen to WLOS (channel 13 TV) or WCQS FM Radio 88.1 for cancellation information. Use your best judgment. If other churches in the area are announcing the cancellation of church services, then assume that the 8:30 a.m. Mass at St. Eugene is canceled as well.

Unless severe weather is in progress there will be an 11:00 a.m. Mass at St. Eugene on Sunday. However, since our parish members live at such distance and at many different elevations, use your best judgment in making a decision to come to church. (Always remember: you may be able to get out of your drive, but road conditions may be poor and no parking may be available at the church because of the weather.)

A message will be posted on our voice mail (828-254-5193, and press 1) should there be any confusion about weekend schedules.
