What to know about the Synod this October
This event is the peak of the Synod discussions. The main topics from discussions held around the world have been funneled into the Agenda for the Bishops’ Synod this October. The event promises to be a “wide-ranging discussion on Pope Francis’ vision of a more inclusive, decentralized, and ‘listening’ Church.” (Catholic News Agency, June 20, 2023)
The document that will focus these discussions, called the “Instrumentum Laboris” or Working Document, covers topics like priestly celibacy, outreach to members of the LGBTQ+ community, the inclusion of divorced and remarried Catholics, the status and participation of women, including their ordination to the diaconate. These topics are covered under much broader issues. The overall theme is “For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, Mission”. These three priority issues are expanded as follows:
- A Communion that radiates: How can we be more fully a sign and instrument of union with God and unity of all humanity?
- Co-responsibility in Mission: How can we better share gifts and tasks in the service of the Gospel?
- Participation, governance, and authority: What processes, structures and institutions can we develop to strengthen a missionary synodal Church?
Who’s Going and Who’s Voting?
The delegates for the October Synod have been announced. There are 364 voting delegates. For the first time, about 21% of these voting delegates will not be bishops. Almost 15% will be women, a total of 54. Pope Francis has invited additional people to add to those elected by each country’s Bishops, “to get a greater mixture of the People of God”.
What is the Church Trying to Accomplish?
Previous Synods of Bishops have dealt with specific doctrinal or pastoral topics. Much work was done in advance and the working drafts of final documents were being formulated. This time the concerns voiced in all the local and continental discussions are on the agenda. The objective is to listen with an effort to understand and learn, and to hear how the Spirit is guiding us.
What Else Is Different?
The Synod is going to be held in a quite different space. Instead of the usual Synod Hall that utilizes stadium-style seating with Cardinals in the first rows, then Bishops, then non-voting priests and lay theologians in the back, this October’s Synod will be held in the Pope Paul VI Audience Hall. It holds over 6,000 people and has room for multiple small group discussions. Does that visual give you a clue just how different Pope Francis wants this Synod to be? It is a layout to foster the participative aspect of a Synodal Church.
What Can We Do?
If we want an open, inclusive church, we will all need to rise to the invitation. Change is hard, and Pope Francis has asked us to pray that we can learn what it takes to walk together in the 21st Century as followers of Jesus, as his church, acknowledging our own frailty and supporting each other along the way.
Below is a prayer to get started. Copies will be found outside the glass doors of the church and on a table in the Adoration Chapel.
Prayer for a Synodal Church
(St. Eugene Parish, 2023)
Lord, as companions on the journey to the kingdom, we are called to support and assist each other. We pray the Holy Spirit will kindle in us a synodal spirit with the courage to let all voices be heard and all persons be welcomed, as we embrace our differences and respect our dignity as children of God.
May this time of the Synod meeting be a time
where those chosen to represent the people of God open their hearts and minds to the movement of the Holy Spirit and move us forward together as Church, maintaining our Catholic identity and being responsive to the needs of life in the modern world.
Open our hearts and the doors of your Church
so that all people may find
a home that is welcoming and companions on the journey
to meet them and walk with them on our pilgrimage home.
We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Continental Stage Document (CSD) which was sent from Rome back to Diocese to make sure all points were included. Representatives of each Diocese met in Continental groups. Our group was the United States and Canada and meetings were held over Zoom.
